The Beijing National Stadium has been termed the "Bird nest Stadium" due to its unique design, which has been described as a ,“nest-styled design”.
The Chinese Olympic authorities started the building of the stadium in December 2003.
Government officials challenged architects worldwide to come up with a unique design for the event.
The Swiss company, Herzog & de Meuron Architekten AG, collaborated with China Architecture Design & Research Group were commissioned to construct the centrepiece for the2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Beijing Olympic Village, for which the Birds Nest is the centrepiece, opened to the public on July 26th, 2008.
The Birds Nest National Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies, as in addition to the athletics events and soccer finals.
